O’DONNELL, Carol Hodgdon, age 80, of Hingham, died May 14 in Hingham. Beloved wife of 58 years of Thomas L. P. O’Donnell, former Chairman of Ropes & Gray LLP. Devoted mother of Ellen Broggi and her husband Richard of Bridgewater, VT, Thomas L. P. O’Donnell, Jr. (Tim) and his wife Elke of Cambridge, Janet G. O’Donnell and her partner (Mr.) Chris Holland of Cohasset, Christopher H. O’Donnell and his wife Elizabeth Call of Cambridge, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Daughter of the late Howard W. Hodgdon of Dedham, and of Frances Tripp Smith Morse. Sister of June H. Nimick of Sewickley, PA. Carol was born in Boston on January 15, 1930, and grew up in Cohasset and Dedham. She attended Derby Academy and was graduated from The Winsor School in 1947, Briarcliff Junior College in 1949, and Tufts University in 1951. She and Tom have lived since 1955 in Hingham, where she was an active member of the community: a founding member of the Friends of the Hingham Public Library, a member of the board of directors of the Hingham VNA, and a member of the Hingham Committee on Disability Issues. In 2001 she was co-recipient with Tom of the Alexis de Tocqueville award from the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. A talented athlete, Carol at various times in her life enjoyed tennis, skiing, golf, and competitive riding at horse shows. Her equestrian interests were emphasized at her winter home at the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in Wellington, FL. She also enjoyed sailing and cruising, and was a longtime member of the Hingham Yacht Club. Funeral from Downing Cottage Funeral Home, 21 Pond Street, Hingham, on Wednesday May19, at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at St. Paul’s Church, 147 North Street, Hingham, at 10 a.m. Visiting hours on Tuesday, May18, from 2-8 p.m. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
