Nickaletta “Nicky” (Efstathiou) Karalekas, 78, of New Bedford died May 13, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long battle with diabetes. She was the beloved wife of Anthony K. Karalekas for 56 years. Born and raised in Chicago, Ill, the daughter of the late George and Bessie (Tangas) Efstathiou. She lived in New Bedford most of her life.
She was an active parishioner of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Dartmouth. She was a member and past president of the Ladies’ Philoptochos Society, a Sunday school teacher and an advisor to the Jr. Greek Orthodox Church Youth Association for over 20 years. “Mrs. K” will always be remembered for her generosity, sense of humor and thoughtfulness. She always treasured the time spent with family and friends especially the annual retreat to Lake Winnipesaukee. “Nicky” enjoyed all sports but will be most remembered as being an avid Chicago Cub fan.
Survivors include her husband, 3 children; Charles Karalekas and his wife Georgia of Wilmington, MA, Paula Karalekas-Martin and her husband Anthony of Dartmouth, and Dr. Christopher Karalekas and his partner Daniel Romard of Waltham; 4 grandchildren; Athena, Anthony and Andrea Karalekas and Gregory Martin, and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Betsy Fay Karalekas and the sister of the late James Efstathiou and Fay Pochos.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Tuesday, May 18th at 9:45 AM. Funeral Service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Cross Rd., Dartmouth at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours Monday, May 17th from 1-4 and 6-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, P.O.
