Obituary

STOUGHTON — Charlotte May Whalen, age 92, died May 11, 2010, at The Copley at Stoughton after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late George E. Whalen who died in 1972.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Edward W. and Ina (Moriarty) Sleight and lived in Dartmouth since 1946.

A graduate of N. B. High School, she worked as secretary at the former Nonquitt-Nashawena Mill from 1935 until 1952, then became associated with Berkshire-Hathaway as an administrative assistant from 1955 to 1961. She subsequently was employed as bookkeeper at Concordia Boatyard Inc., in Padanaram for 33 years until retiring in 1994. She then assisted a local author, Waldo Howland in preparing his third book for publication.

Charlotte was a devoted member of the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth for 50 years where she taught Sunday School and Summer Bible School for many years, was a member of the White Circle of the Women's Guild and served on many boards and committees including Christian Outreach, Deacons and Ways and Means. She was also a member of the Friends of the Elderly and volunteered as a bookkeeper for the South Dartmouth Council on Aging for several years. She also was a member of the Helen Hughes Club.

Survived by daughter, Charlene A. Whalen of New Bedford; and son, George E. Whalen of New Bedford; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer C. Whalen of West Wareham, Jason G. Whalen and his wife, Rochelle of South Dartmouth, Joshua M. Whalen and his wife, Michele of Parrish, Florida, Rodney Hebert of Westborough, Jennifer Urbanek of New York, Michael M. Whalen and Nicole J. Blanchard and husband, Max of La Mesa, CA; and 6 great-grandchildren, Chloe C. Whalen and Benjamin J. Whalen of West Wareham, Noah L. Whalen of South Dartmouth, Cassandra Urbanek of New York, Hannah L. Whalen of New Bedford and Clayton K. Blanchard; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Louis N. Somers, Clifford E. Sleight, Harriet E. (Sleight) Belanger, and Richard P. Sleight.
