Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Joseph F. Amero, Sr., 88, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital following a battle with lung cancer. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret E. (White) Amero, who died on December 4, 2009. They had shared sixty-eight years of marriage.
Born in Gloucester on February 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Helen E. (Anderson) Amero. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Joe proudly served under General Patton in the European Theatre. He was a rifleman in the 95th Infantry Division, 379th Regiment and was honorably discharged in October of 1945.
Upon his return from the war, Joe served as a Police Officer for the City of Gloucester for 35 years and was a proud lifetime member of the Gloucester Lodge of the Elks No. 892. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan who watched every game and loved Jacoby Ellsbury. Joe loved his grandchildren more than anything in the world and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Joe is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Gordon Jellow of Georgetown and Gemma and Neil Flavin of Rockport; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph F. Amero, Jr. and James and Beverly Amero all of Gloucester; eight beloved grandchildren, Kim Amero of Gloucester, Nadine Marcheterre of Newburyport, Jamie Amero of Essex, Timothy Jellow of Georgetown, Adam Amero of Hamilton, Nicole Jellow of Nashua, NH and special granddaughters, Molly Amero of Gloucester and Sophia Grausam of Rockport and several great-grandchildren, Jason Amero, Nichole Mitchell, Anna and Julia Marcheterre, Brendan and Katie Jellow and Megan and Sydney Amero. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne and her husband, James Borden of Florida, sisters-in-law Barbara Amero and Elenor Amero, both of Gloucester, sister-in-law Yvonne, and her husband Michael Blackwell of Honolulu, HI. brothers-in-law James R. White of Easton, PA and Everett C. “Lindy” White of Blossburg, PA, special cousin, John Louie Amirault and his wife Pat of Essex; and many nieces, nephews and a special friend, Raynee Burnham, who has taken care of Joe during his illness. He was also predeceased by his brothers, John “Pickles” Amero and Leo Amero, his sister, Janice and her husband John Costoplus, daughter-in-law, Andrea L. (Means) Amero, sister-in-law, Priscilla Newman, and her husband, Warren “Hop” Newman and sister-in-law, Barbara White.
Services will be held on Friday morning in the Beechbrook Cemetery, West Gloucester at 9 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 5 – 8 p.m. The Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892 will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
