Obituary

Gladys E. Farrington, 90, of Berlin, died Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Berlin April 28, 1920, the daughter of Edgar and Inez Durdan of Prince Edward Island, and has been a lifelong resident of this city. She worked as a bookkeeper for Newberry’s department store during World War II and married Norman P. Farrington upon his return from active duty. They had three children, Dana Farrington, deceased, of Berlin, Jean Farrington, deceased, of Jackson, Me., and Carl Farrington of Hineshurg, Vt. The job that meant the most to her in her life was that of children’s librarian for the Berlin Public Library for some 25 years. She absolutely enjoyed the children and followed them through their lives as they had kids of their own. She found great pleasure in seeing library patrons from the past, being able to remember their names, the names of their parents and so on. She was also a volunteer at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital gift shop, a member of the Ladies AuxilIary and of the Congregational Church in Berlin.

Members of the family include Carl and Brenda Farrington of Hinesburg; grandchildren, Shannon Surette of Cornish, Me., Adam Farrington of Poland, Me.; stepgrandchildren, Michelle and Jennifer Audette of Middlebury, Vt., David Audette of Colchester, Vt., and Sarah Wortheim of Hollis, Me.; several neices, nephews and greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
