Jack Flynn
..retired Tewksbury Fire Lieutenant; 80
HAVERHILL - Jack Flynn, age 80, a Korean War Veteran and retired Tewksbury Firefighter, died Saturday, April 17, at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverhill, following a long period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Thelma M. (Philbrick) Flynn, with whom he had celebrated a 58th wedding anniversary this past July 8th.
He was born in East Aurora, New York, March 2, 1930, the son of the late John and Edith (Darbee) Flynn. He was raised in East Aurora, and entered into the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served during the Korean War, and spent his sea duty aboard the U.S.S. Philippine Sea aircraft carrier.
Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, he moved to Tewksbury, where he resided for 46 years.
He was appointed to the Tewksbury Fire Department as a Call Firefighter on October 1, 1956, and named permanent Firefighter on January 19, 1964. He was promoted to Lieutenant on January 16, 1977, and retired from duty on March 16, 1985. He served most of his career assigned to Engine 2, at Tewksbury's South Station.
He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1647; the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts; and the AmVets of Massachusetts.
He moved to Haverhill nine years ago.
Since retirement, Jack had enjoyed golf, and living in Haverhill.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Fr. Michael K. Flynn, S.M. of Elyria, Ohio, Keith A. Flynn of Woburn, and James M. Flynn and his wife Rose (Leonard) of Haverhill; eight grandchildren, Beth Comerford of Danville, NH, Meghan Flynn of Methuen, Jason Volak of CO, Nicolle Russell of FL, Keith Russell and Kaitlyn Russell both of Peabody, Rachael Flynn and Jessica Flynn both of Haverhill; two great grandchildren, Grace, and Ryleigh; several nieces and nephews, including Richard Garrett of AZ; and many dear friends and retired co-workers.
He was also father of the late Stephen M. Flynn.
His Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, April 21 in St. William's Church followed by burial with U.S. Navy honors in St. Mary's Cemetery, No. Tewksbury. Memorials to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 are appreciated.
