Obituary

Warren M. Alexander, 74, of Talking Rock, Georgia (formerly of Fitzgerald), died Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Saturday, April 10, at Northside Primitive Baptist Church in Marietta with Elder Jason Solomon and Elder Pat McCoy officiating. Further services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, April 11, at Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County with Elder Edward McIntyre and Elder Jimmy Chapman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Saturday evening at Paulk Funeral Home in Fitzgerald.

Mr. Alexander was born February 25, 1936 in Berrien County to the late William Arthur and Lillian Whitley Alexander. He was a 1954 graduate of Irwin County High School. He received his Associate Degree from Thomas College in Thomasville, his Bachelors Degree from Georgia Southern University and his Education Specialist Degree from the University of Georgia. He also did studies at Valdosta State. His first teaching assignment was at Hahira High School where he taught science and biology and was also a football, track and girls basketball coach. He taught and coached in Treutlen County High School and Hawkinsville before becoming a principal and later superintendent in Hawkinsville. He served as superintendent in Vienna before coming to Fitzgerald in 1985. He was named Citizen of the Year by the Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Chamber of Commerce in 1991 for his efforts to merge the city and County school Systems when he was willing to step down as city school superintendent. He moved to Talking Rock in 1998 from Fitzgerald. He was a member of Northside Primitive Baptist Church in Marietta. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Hawkinsville and the Rotary Club of Fitzgerald and served as President of the Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County Chamber of Commerce in 1992. Mr. Alexander also was former owner/operator of Alexander Auto in Fitzgerald and Jasper.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years: Louise DeVane Alexander of Talking Rock; sons & daughters-in-law: Mark & Cathy Alexander of Woodstock and Dale & Kimberly Alexander of Canton; 5 grandchildren; brothers & sister-in-law: Billy & Sandra Alexander, Bobby Alexander and Jimmy Alexander, all of Fitzgerald; sisters & brother-in-law: Peggy A. Player, Terri Alexander and Connie A. & Randy Smith, all of Fitzgerald, as well as several nieces and nephews.
