Obituary

WORCESTER-Walter M. Murphy, 80, of Worcester, formerly of Oxford, died Tuesday, March 23rd in the St. Francis Home. His wife of 55 years, Virginia A. (O’Brien) Murphy died in 2005. He leaves his son, Michael M. Murphy and his wife Pamela of Auburn; his daughter, Maureen V. Herrion and her husband William of Dover, NH; a brother, William Murphy of Melbourne, FL; his sister Ann Murphy of Worcester; 5 grandchildren, Sarah, Jenna and Hannah Murphy and Ryan and Caitlin Herrion; and several nephews and nieces.
He was born in Worcester the son of Michael and Mary (Flynn) Murphy; and was a Korean War Army veteran. Mr. Murphy was a graduate of St. Stephen’s High School and the New England School of Accounting. He had retired in 1993 from UMass Medical Center where he had worked as a receiving supervisor, and previously worked as a payroll accountant for U.S. Steel and Wire. Mr. Murphy was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He enjoyed playing softball in the Jack Benny League, playing pitch and was an avid Red Sox fan. Mr. Murphy was easily distinguished by his ever present baseball cap.
The funeral is Monday, March 29th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Ann’s Church, 654 Main Street, North Oxford. Burial will follow in North Cemetery in Oxford. Calling hours are Sunday, March 28th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
