
ROCKPORT: Miss Edith “Dee” J. Purdy, 87, of 2-R Broadway Terrace, Rockport died Friday morning, March 19, 2010 in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
Born in Boston on June 3, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Sidney L. and Annie M. (Newbold) Purdy. She was a graduate of the Somerville High School in 1940 and attended the former Boston Filing & Indexing School.
Miss Purdy was employed by the former Mutual Boiler Insurance Company of Boston, which became the Arkwright-Boston Insurance Company. She was the administrative assistant to the vice president.
Following her retirement, she took a position in the admissions department at Addison Gilbert Hospital, where she remained for fifteen years until her second retirement in 2008. She also volunteered at Second Glance for the Cape Ann Food Pantry/Open Door.
An avid traveler, she took numerous cruises and traveled throughout the United States.
She was an active member of the Rose Baker Senior Center and enjoyed spending time in their art department, contributing to the illustrations for the book, If I were A Dog.
A loving and devoted, sister, aunt and friend, she was known to never forget a birthday and was always thinking of others.
She is survived by her nieces, Leslie “Penny” Sinclair, wife of Frank, Jayne Dulong, Paige Parisi, wife of Joseph, Lee Sylva, wife of Michael and Judith Anderson. She also leaves a nephew, Craig Dulong, husband of Sash Ludwig and many grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews and many dear friends. She was also predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Stanley Dulong and her brother, James Purdy.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced by the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
