David Eugene Varrieur, a longtime resident of Bridgewater passed away on Saturday March 20, 2010 after a long illness. He was born January 25, 1938 to the late Emma L. and Joseph R. Varrieur.
After graduating from Brockton High School in 1955, he enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in Germany from 1956 to 1958, serving in special services as a cook. He remained in the Army Reserves until separating in 1961. He was immediately employed as a chef for the Capeway Manor from 1961 to 1968.
In 1969, he and his beloved late wife Alice (Linehan) Varrieur, established Dave’s Back Room bar and restaurant on Perkins Avenue in Brockton. It soon became a regular meeting place for friends and prominent citizens until it was sold in 1990. Every Thanksgiving found him cooking and serving dinners in local soup kitchens.
David is survived by two brothers John E. of Sapphire Lakes, NC and William E. of Gaithersburg, MD and a sister Polly J. Craig of Woodstock, GA, as well as eight nieces, nine nephews and numerous cousins. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Raymond J., Robert A. and Roy V. Varrieur. His loving niece Patricia and his brother John provided great comfort during his final illness.
Funeral Service in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Tuesday at 11 am with visitation 10 to 11 am. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery. Donations in David’s name may be made to Asera Care Hospice, 40 Washington St. Suite 110, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.
