Richard A. Nissen, 80, of New Bedford died February 24, 2010 at Beth Israel Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Jean F. (Hitt) Nissen.
Born and raised in Clinton, Iowa, the son of the late Christian and Ella (Ingwersen) Nissen, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
He was formerly employed as foreman of the Goodhue Lumber Yard in Freetown for over 30 years until retirement.
Mr. Nissen enjoyed tending to his yard and being a handyman. He was an avid baker, sharing his confections with many. Mr. Nissen volunteered his time at St. Luke's Hospital for many years.
He was a member of the Nonquitt Bowling League. Mr. Nissen served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Survivors include 2 sons, Robert Nissen and his wife Maureen of Marion and James Nissen and his wife Kerry of Franklin, MA; 3 daughters, Nancy Nissen of Rancho Cordova, CA, Janice Cleveland and her husband John of East Freetown and Joyce Evangelho and her husband Steve of Dartmouth; a brother, Marvin Nissen of Clinton, Iowa; a sister, Doris Brinkman of Illinois; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Ruth Mather.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 2nd at 10 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours Monday, March 1st from 3-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
