GLOUCESTER: Mary A. (Murphy) Vicari, 89, died February 23, 2010 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Robert P. "Bat" Vicari, who died in March of 1996.
Born in Newburyport on June 5, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (Costello) Murphy. She was a graduate of Newburyport High School. Following their marriage in 1946, they made their home in Bay View, where they owned and operated Vicari’s Package & Grocery Store on Washington Street for over fifty years.
Mrs. Vicari was also employed as a sales clerk at the former W.T. Grants and Mal’s Department Stores as well as El-J’s.
She was a longtime communicant of the former Sacred Heart Church, Lanesville.
Mrs. Vicari enjoyed spending time with her family hosting many Sunday dinners at her lovely home in Bay View or taking an afternoon drive to visit with her brothers and sisters and their families.
She is survived by her sister, Mildred Smith of Syracuse, NY, two sisters-in-law, Grace (Clark) Vicari of Gloucester and Mary Murphy of Haverhill, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Rose Howe, and five brothers, Bernard, Joseph, William, John and James Murphy.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church on Friday morning at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 9 – 10:15 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SeniorCare, Inc., 5 Blackburn Center, Gloucester, MA 01930. Interment will be held in the Seaside Cemetery.
