Obituary

Frederick Kidd, 92, of Tilton, NH, died Sunday, February 14, 2010 in the Franklin Regional Hospital, Franklin, NH. Mr. Kidd was born in Wakefield, MA on April 10, 1917, son of the late James and Ada M. (Thornton) Kidd. He was a resident of Tilton for the last 5 ½ years, formerly living in Sandown, NH. He was also a long time resident of Andover Massachusetts, and grew up in the Ballardvale section of Andover, MA . Mr. Kidd served with the US Army Air Corps during WWII and received the purple heart. Serving as a waist gunner/crew captain, his B-24 was shot down over Berlin on a bombing run. He bailed out with his crew and broke his hip on landing, He was captured by the Russians and was patched up in a farm house under their control. He was MIA for six months. The Russians were eventually able to fly him out to Odessa from where he was transported to the states. Following his discharge from the service he married his childhood sweetheart Marjorie Colbath and went to work for Phillips Academy in Andover, retiring in 1982. Mr. Kidd was a former member of the Andover Elks Lodge and the N. Andover Unitarian Church. He was an avid Red Sox fan and sports fan. Mr. Kidd had been scouted for the major leagues as a 2nd baseman prior to the war. He enjoyed going on vacations and wintering in Florida. Mr. Kidd loved ballroom dancing every Saturday night with his wife, Marjorie.



He is survived by a son, James Kidd and his wife Sarah of Sandown, a granddaughter, Victoria Kidd of Sandown, a grandson, Michael Kidd of Litchfield, NH and a sister, Margaret "Jiggs" Currier of Rockport, MA. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie (Colbath) Kidd in 1998 and also by two sisters.



There are no calling hours. Following cremation, graveside services with military honors will be held at the family’s convenience in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry, NH is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Bldg. #9 Lawrence, MA 01843.
