Obituary

Shinji "Henry" Furuno, 84, died peacefully on February 7, at Mystic Healthcare. He was born in Stockton CA on December 12, 1925, the son of Yusuke and Rika Kiyohara Furuno. He was the husband of the late Misako Iwata Furuno who died in 1978.

Henry is survived by his son, David and his wife Yuen, of California, two granddaughters Sara and Stephanie Furuno, and his brother Haruki Furuno of Japan.

Henry worked for the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics for thirty-two years where he attained the position of Manager of Naval Architecture. He and his team were responsible for the structural design, and for overseeing the construction of various classes of US Navy submarines including the Nuclear Powered Research Vessel NR-1. He was highly regarded by his peers in the design community, in shipyard construction management, and by his counterparts in the US Navy.

Henry was a devoted fan of the NY Yankees and the UCONN Women’s teams.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, 2/13/2010 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic. Burial will be private.
