Obituary

Alma “Nicky” Trench, 88, was killed on February 4 when she was struck by an SUV while in an East Main Street crosswalk in Mystic. The tragedy has shocked and devastated her family and friends including residents at Stoneridge, members of her stitching club, and parishioners at St Marks Episcopal Church. Her outgoing nature, genuine love of people and animals, and sincere efforts to help those in need were part of what made her so special.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1943. Responding to World War II, she enlisted in the Navy. Serving in the WAVES from 1944 - 1947 where she attained the rank of Lieutenant J.G. Alma then attended University of Iowa, receiving an M.A. degree in clinical psychology. After working for 5 years at the Psychopathic Hospital in Iowa City, she moved to Hartford and worked as a clinical psychologist at the Institute of Living for 19 years.

In 1964, Alma married Dr. James M. Trench. They moved to Mystic in 1979 where she volunteered in many community organizations including the Claude Chester Elementary School literacy program, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC), St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and was a member of the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Auxiliary - working in their gift shop.

She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, Isaac and Mary Alma Nicholas, and brothers, James and Herbert. Alma is survived by her sister-in-law and college friend, Anna Jane Nicholas, four nieces and nephews, a step-daughter, four step-grandchildren, two great nieces and a great nephew who will miss her love, wisdom, and good company.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 13 at 11:00 am at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street in Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DPNC and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
