Obituary

HOLDEN-Gregory P. Zekos, 77, of Holden, died Wednesday, February 3rd in his home after a struggle with lung cancer. He leaves his devoted wife of 44 years, Maria K. (Paskalis) Zekos; two sons, Christopher G. Zekos and his wife Colleen of Worcester and Anthony G. Zekos and his wife Heidi of Holden; his daughter Joanna M., wife of Stephen Vasalofsky of Worcester; five grandchildren, his namesake Gregory, Alex and Anthony Zekos, Zoe Vasalofsky, and Ava Zekos; and several nephews and nieces. His brother Thomas P. Zekos died in 2008.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Spyridon and Aphrodite (Economou) Zekos. Mr. Zekos was a graduate of Commerce High School and attended Worcester State College. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the Navy. Mr. Zekos had worked 25 years for Mass Rehab, retiring in 1993 as Regional Supervisor. Greg was very proud of his Greek heritage and was a long time member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral having served as Parish Council President, a member of AHEPA, the Greendale Y, the Disabled American Veterans and had once served as Commissioner of Hope Cemetery. He was a passionate caring person who had a zest for life, and was extremely devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren.
The funeral is Monday, February 8th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a service at 11:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, February 7th from 3:00 until 6:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral Family Center, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
