Obituary

WORCESTER- Captain Matthew C. Wright, 83 years old, died Tuesday, January 26 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born in Worcester on June 18, 1926, the son of Clarence and Catherine (Walsh) Wright. He joined the Navy in World War II and was stationed aboard the USS Atherton from 1944 to 1946. The day the war ended he was aboard the USS Atherton observing the activities of a German U-Boat off Block Island and they sank it. In 1956 he joined the Worcester Police Department and worked up to the rank of Captain. He took the Deputy Chief exam and came out one of the top three contenders. Ironically he turned 65 before the list was established and he retired in 1991.
He leaves his wife Helen Rita (Ciuksza) Wright and son, Matthew John Wright of Worcester; a sister Kay McGinn, niece Kathleen McGinn and nephew Dennis Wright. A brother, Edward Wright predeceased him. He enjoyed baseball, football and mystery novels.
The funeral will be held on Friday, January 29 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.
