Obituary

SALEM- Charles A. Jackson, age 80, husband of Bernice V. (Mendez) Jackson, of Salem, died Tuesday morning, September 23, 2003 in the Salem Hospital following a short illness.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late George, Sr. and Christalia (Richardson) Jackson. A lifelong resident of the city, he was a graduate of Salem High School in the class of 1942 and was a member of the football team.

Prior to his retirement in 1993, he was employed at Holyoke Mutual Insurance Company in Salem for 30 years. He previously worked for 20 years at the former A. C. Lawrence Leather Company in Peabody.

An Army veteran of WWII, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with Company H., 366th Infantry Regiment and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Mr. Jackson was a member of the Holyoke Golf League, the One Salem Green Golf League, both of Salem, and the Soulites Bowling League of Lynn. An avid traveler, he completed five cross country road trips and traveled to Europe, South America and Australia.

Besides his wife, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage, he is survived by one son, Peter Jackson and his wife Julie Carey Jackson of Marblehead, one daughter, Pamela V. Jackson of Salem and her fiancee, Jerome Frasier of Boston, two grandchildren, Taylor S. Jackson and Nickson C. Jackson, both of Marblehead, two brothers, Howard Jackson of Lynn, Horatio Jackson of Newton, two sisters, Helen Merrill of Cambridge, Amelia Sparrow of Everett and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ralph Jackson, George Jackson, Jr., Carl Jackson, Hubert Jackson, Gloria Jackson, Valderia Jackson, Elizabeth Hall

His funeral service will be held on Friday, September 26, 2003 at 10 am at the Grace Church in Salem, Episcopal, 385 Essex St., Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Burial is in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
