Obituary

Jose M. Avelar, 72, died unexpectedly at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Monday, January 18, 2009. He was the husband of Milagres (Viveiros) Avelar and the late Maria (Dias) Avelar. Born in Corvo, Azores, Portugal, he was raised and educated there. In 1975, he immigrated to the United States and settled in Stoughton. He worked as a forklift operator for J. Baker Shoes in Canton for over 20 years. For the past 6 years he has worked as a livery driver for All Town Taxi in Stoughton. He was a member and Past President of the Holy Ghost Society of the Azores in Stoughton. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, tending to his fruit trees, fishing and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Joe Avelar and his wife Gloria of Stoughton and John A. Avelar and his wife Kara of Walpole. He was the brother of the late Rosa DeAna and the uncle of Cindy DeAna and Christina Lima. Mr. Avelar was the grandfather of Jennifer, Andrew, Heather, Niklas, Mattheu and Julianna Avelar.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Friday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday 5-8 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
