Roger Nunes, Jr., 84, of New Bedford died Monday January 18, 2010 at the V.A. Medical Center in Brockton. He was the husband of Norma E. (Cabral) Nunes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Roger and Maria Theresa (Costa) Nunes, he lived in Harwich and New Bedford for many years.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Nunes was formerly employed as a bricklayer for various construction companies until his retirement.
He was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association, the Disabled American Veterans Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter 7, the Cape Verdean Sons and Daughters of Nantucket, and the Bricklayers Union. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS LST 491 participating in the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Pamela Nunes of Brookline, Mary Ellen Nunes of Washington, DC, and Shelley Nunes of Harwich; three stepsons, Steven Teixeira of Rome, Italy, Isa Najjar of New Bedford, and Albert Teixeira of Ohio; two sisters, Sally Alves of Harwich, and Joan Weaver of Virginia; his aunt, Alice Mendes of New Bedford; a granddaughter, Yani Brinson of Detroit, MI; five step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne.
