Obituary

Wentland, Agnes Adam (Murray), formerly of Quincy, died peacefully January 15 at Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center where she had resided for several years.

Born April 10, 1911, in Glasgow, Scotland, she came to this country with her family in 1912 in ship’s steerage. Many times Agnes reminisced about watching the soldiers returning from World War I marching down the main street in Whitman after their victory. She also recalled losing a four-year-old friend to the 1918 influenza epidemic. When she was still a young girl, Agnes and her family moved to Connecticut where she lived most of her life.

Agnes worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft during WWII, making airplane parts and being paid piecemeal. Out of concern for the safety of the troops depending on the parts she made, Agnes worked painstakingly, sacrificing pay for precision.

For many years, Agnes was an auditor for the State of Connecticut, retiring from her position in 1979 and moving to Massachusetts to be closer to her family. She continued to work in Boston until she was eighty-two.

She loved music, singing and playing the piano. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, trivia and word games, watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy” and reading mystery novels.

She leaves two daughters, Carol W. Chubb and her husband, Timothy J. Coffey, of Duxbury; Cristyl W. Patterson and her husband, Jon, of Arlington; three grandchildren, Lewis W. Chubb IV, and his wife, Marybeth, of Plymouth; Sara M. Patterson of Hanson; and Jon A. (Jay) Patterson of Studio City, California. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Madigan Agnes Chubb, and a nephew, Gene W. Martin of New Britain, Connecticut.
