...U.S. Navy Intelligence during WWII; 93
TEWKSBURY - Christine M. (Cheetham) Nolan, age 93, beloved matriarch of a well known family, died Sunday evening, January 10, at the Wingate At Andover, following a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late John J. Nolan, who died in 1978.
She was born in Lowell, May 5, 1916, the fourth of ten children of the late John Joseph and Ellen Marie (Garvey) Cheetham.
During WWII, she enlisted into the U.S. Navy, and served in the Navy Intelligence Agency, stationed in Washington D.C. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, she married her beloved husband and moved to Salem Road in Tewksbury, to raise her family.
She was an active parishioner of both St. Dorothy's and St. William's Churches, served as a Rosary Leader, and attended daily Mass throughout her life. She and her husband "Jack" were active on the Tewksbury political scene for many years. She will be remembered for her devotion to her large family and her works of kindness and charity to the community. She was renowned for sharing her homemade bread, pies, soups and homegrown vegetables with dear friends, family and her parish community.
She is survived by seven children, Christine Kinnon of Tewksbury, Mary J. and her husband Ted Buczynski of Lowell, Atty. John J. Nolan and his wife Mary Ann (Toohey) of Andover, Edward L. and his wife Catherine (Johnson) Nolan of Tewksbury, Catherine "Kittie" and her husband Roger Desharnais of Lowell, Thomas G. Nolan and his wife Jane (Churchill) of Charlottesville, VA, Warrant Officer 5 David F. Nolan, U.S. Army and his wife Yvonne (Spranger) of Hope Mills, N.C.; three brothers, Henry Cheetham of Lowell, Walter and his wife Georgette Cheetham of CT, Daniel Cheetham of NH; two sisters-in-law, Mary "May" Cheetham of Lowell and Catherine L. Nolan of Tewksbury; 25 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter and many, many nieces and nephews.
She was also mother of the late Mary Ann Nolan; mother-in-law of the late Albert R. Kinnon, and sister of the late Frances Robarge, Sister Catherine Norberta OP, James Cheetham, George Cheetham, Thomas Cheetham, and Joseph Cheetham.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, January 15, in St. William's Church, Tewksbury. Burial with Navy Honors followed at Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Salvation Army, 150 Appleton St., Lowell, MA 01852, will be appreciated.
