DERRY, NH - Richard A. Whitney, age 69, a Veteran and retired businessman, died Saturday morning at the Derry Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Derry, following a long period of declining health. He was the husband of Lucille F. (DiPadova) Whitney, who died in February 2001.
He was born in Everett, Mass., one of five children of the late Donald and Nina (Abbott) Whitney. He was raised in the U.S. and Europe as his father was serving in the Army. He lived the greater part of his life in Tewksbury, was a graduate of Tewksbury Memorial High School, and earned an Associates Degree from Newbury Junior College.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bristol during the early Vietnam War era.
He was a sheet metal mechanic by trade and founded and operated L & R Associates, sheet metal fabrication company until his retirement.
He enjoyed antique and custom automobile shows, camping with family in NH, and was an accomplished pianist despite his inability to "read" music.
He is survived by three children, Richard J. Whitney of Haverhill, MA, Joyce J. Elmore and her husband Edwin of Hampton, VA, and Alan P. Whitney of Lowell; two sisters, Judy Young of Concord, NH and Karen Supry of Manchester, NH; three grandsons, James, Daniel and Alan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Janice Rich and Ronald Whitney.
His Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Jan. 14, in St. Dorothy's Church, Wilmington. Burial with Navy Honors followed at Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the American Diabetes Assoc., P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 will be appreciated.
