Obituary

William G. Thompson, age 87, of Needham, passed away on December 28, 2009. He was born on January 16, 1922, the son of the late William E. and Sarah P. (Guilford) Thompson. Bill graduated from Fairhaven High School, class of 1940 and attended Boston University. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Combat Engineers in Europe and the Pacific Theatre, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon his release from the military, his interest led him into Radio Broadcasting, working at stations in North Adams and Taunton and finally for RCA Victor Records.
He moved to work at Lordly and Dame, Literary Agents and after a few years started his own company, Briarwood Writers’ Alliance, which represented Pulitzer & Nobel winners writers and poets to colleges and universities for campus readings. Success in this specialized field carried him the respect and friendships of authors and poets the world over.
Bill traveled the world and would entertain family and friends with his stories and adventures. Bill’s family was with him when he passed.
Bill was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Wright and brothers, Russell, Frank and Tommy Thompson and his companion of 50 years William Mitchell. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Congregation Church of West Medford, 400 High Street, Medford, from which his Funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 2 PM. Many relatives and friends were in attendance. Interment was private. Visiting hours were held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, Friday, January 1, 2010, from 4 to 7 PM.
