Mary (Hird) Whitney, 97, of Hudson, died Monday, December 28th at Marlborough Hospital. She was the wife of the late Donald F. Whitney for 44 years who died in 1980.
She was born and raised in Fitchburg, daughter of the late John and Susanah (Binns) Hird. She was a graduate of Fitchburg High School, class of 1929 and has resided in Hudson for the past 73 years. Mary was employed as a cafeteria kitchen manager at Hudson High School for many years before her retirement. She was the Past Worthy Matron of Corinthian Chapter of Eastern Star and a member of the Hudson Booster Club for many years. She was also an avid Boston Bruins and New England Patriots fan and also enjoyed time doing crossword puzzles and reading. The highlight of her life was always her grandchildren.
She is survived by her two sons, Donald Whitney and his wife Ruth and Peter Whitney and his wife Ellen, all of Hudson. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren Kevin Whitney and his wife Susan, Don “Shack” Whitney and his wife Kim, Scott Whitney and his wife Christyn, Sean Whitney and his wife Kerry and Steven Whitney and his wife Andrea. In addition to her grandchildren she leaves 8 great grandchildren, Matt, Lynsay, Alyssa, Madyson, Jack, Mason, Brandon and Lexus.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday December 31st at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Church, 5 Washington Street, Wood Square, Hudson. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery in Fitchburg. There are no calling hours.
