Funeral services for Earl Henry Nelson, Sr., 68, of Ashburn will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Ashburn First United Methodist Church at 2:00 P.M. with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashburn. Mr. Nelson died Monday at his residence following an illness of pulmonary fibrosis.
Mr. Nelson was born in Turner County, Georgia and was the son the late John N. & Florence Mae Stevens Nelson. “Pops” was a beloved father and grandfather. He was a lifetime farmer and owner and operator of Spedaco Transport, Inc., Cordele, Ga., named after his children, Speedy, David and Connie. He was a member of the Ashburn First United Methodist Church. After retiring he grew roses instead of peanuts. He enjoyed growing watermelons and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Sara Johnston Nelson, Ashburn, Ga.; sons and daughters in law: David & Ginger Nelson, Tifton, Ga., Earl Henry ‘Speedy’ & Kelley Nelson, Jr.. Tifton, Ga., his daughter and son in law, Connie & Von Hobbs, Hiawassee, Ga. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and a special nephew, Franklin “Butch” & Tammy Nelson of Tifton, Ga. Also surviving is his brother, James F. Nelson, Ashburn, Ga. , and three sisters, Gertrude Jones, Ashburn, Ga., Mary Hartman, Jacksonville, FL, Virginia Venable, Fairhope, Ala.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Chapel.
