Carmen I. (DeJesus) Volkart, 78, of Mansfield passed away on Saturday December 26, 2009 at the Goddard Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Stoughton. She was the beloved wife of Harry G. Volkart whom she married on February 25, 1970.
Born in Dorado, Puerto Rico on November 16, 1931 she was a loving daughter of the late Armando and Julia (Carballo) DeJesus.
Carmen grew up and was educated in Puerto Rico and at the age of 18 moved to the United States. She first settled in New York, later moved to Connecticut and for the past 37 years has resided in Mansfield.
During the Korean Conflict she proudly served her country by in the United States Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private E-1.
A dedicated homemaker to her dear family, they were the focus of her life. Mrs. Volkart enjoyed cooking, gardening and attending services at the LaSalette Shrine in Attleboro.
In addition to her beloved husband of nearly 40 years, she is survived by her devoted children Kathleen Silva of Buzzards Bay, Colleen Thake of South Carolina, Maureen Ruane of Iowa and Christopher Volkart of Mansfield. Mrs. Volkhart was the cherished grandmother of Candice McKenna, Michael McKenna, Dylan McKenna, Sonny Diesburg, Haley Stansberry, Kirsten Volkart, Jacob Thake and the late Amber Diesburg and is also survived by her great granddaughter Mia Plourde.
A prayer service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday December 31st at 10:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours have been omitted and in lieu of flowers, Carmen’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Association 720 Harrison Ave. Boston, MA 02118.
