Obituary

WORCESTER-Wonna G. Eliopoulos, M.D., of Worcester and West Ossipee, NH, died Monday, November 23rd in Mashpee Care and Rehabilitation Center. She is survived by her sister Constance Eliopoulos of Worcester; four nephews, Dr. Theodore A. Calianos and his wife Sheryl of Cotuit, Andreas G. Calianos and his wife Melinda of Northampton, Jason C. Calianos and his wife Tara of Hingham, and Judge Jonathan C. Calianos and his wife Catharine of Upton; and many grandnephews and grandnieces. When faced with the sudden loss of her sister Susan Calianos in 1979, Wonna and her sister Constance assisted in raising their four nephews.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of George and Irene (Simponis) Eliopoulos. Dr. Eliopoulos graduated from Clark University and received her medical training at the University of Athens Medical School, graduating summa cum laude in 1962. Wonna served her Internship in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Boston; and completed her Psychiatric residency at Worcester State Hospital. She began her career working in the Worcester Juvenile Court System as a Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist. She later entered private practice maintaining offices in Worcester, Shrewsbury and Holden and had been a forensic psychiatrist. Dr. Eliopoulos was a long time member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, had served on its Parish Council; she helped lay the cornerstone for the new St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church when it relocated from Orange Street to its present location; and a member of St. Spyridon Ladies Philoptochos. She was a member of the American Medical Association. Wonna was very dedicated to her family, community, profession, patients and church.
The funeral is Saturday, November 28th with a service at 10:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, November 27th, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue.
