Hudson, MA
Abel J. Fernandes, 85, of Hudson, formerly of Marlboro, died on Saturday, November 21st at Marlboro Hills Healthcare Center. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Virginia A. (Underwood) Fernandes of Hudson.
Abel was born and raised in Hudson, son of the late Joaquim and Maria (Henriques) Fernandes and was a graduate of the Worcester Trade School in Worcester. He attended the Wentworth Institute in Boston prior to enlisting in the Navy where he served as an Electrician’s mate 2nd Class during WWII aboard the USS Canberra in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was employed as a Chief Electrical Engineer by General Motors in Framingham for 35 years until retiring in 1984. He was a member of the GM Salaried Retired Club, member of the Amvets and member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson. Abel enjoyed traveling and especially looked forward to spending the winter months with his wife Virginia at their residence in Clearwater, FL.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two children, MaryEllen DeVincent and her husband Stephen of Norton and Paul J. Fernandes and his wife Justine of Hudson. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Gianakos of New York, Arlene McKelvy of Pennsylvania; his brother, Antonio Fernandes of Delaware and his three grandchildren, Karen M. DeVincent and Jennifer and Cristina Fernandes. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Jennie (DiRico) Fernandes in 1970.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 24th at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Marlboro. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Nov. 23rd from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, Nov. 24th, from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. (prior to the mass) at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
