BEVERLY: Donald Sidney Newman, 93, formerly of 18 Grove Street, Essex died Sunday morning, November 15, 2009 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a brief illness with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Newman, who died in July of 1987.
Born in Gloucester on December 3, 1915, he was the son of the late Seth and Ethel (Brown) Newman.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. Upon his return, he worked as a milkman for many years at the former O’Neil & Newman Dairy, the Ipswich Dairy and Hood.
For the last twenty-seven years of his career, he was employed as a press operator for General Electric in Lynn, having retired in 1981.
He loved to travel and dine out. In 1988 he drove his motor home across the country to Alaska. He was a gentleman with a happy disposition who loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, Gary D. Newman and his companion, Mary Lou Pereira, with whom he resided for the past five years. He also leaves his sister, Jeanette Hubbard, brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Janice Newman all of Gloucester and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a sister, Barbara White and five brothers, Myron, Charles, Merrill, Grant and John “Jackie” Newman.
Services will be held from the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., followed by his funeral servi e in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday evening from 5 - 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the American Heart Assoc., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Interment will be held in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex.
