TEWKSBURY - Edith M. "Edie" (McAleavey) Wood, age 75, a former Algonquin Drive resident, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, November 8, at the Blaire House of Tewksbury. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald R. Wood, who died in 2004.
She was born in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston, one of eight children of the late Patrick and Sarah (Fearon) McALeavey, and raised in Cambridge. She moved to Tewksbury in 1963 to raise her family. She retired to Bradford, Maine, for twelve years before returning to Carnation Drive in Tewksbury in 2003. Before her retirement, she was employed as a machine operator for TRW in Westminster.
Her family noted that she unselfishly devoted her life to her family, always placing her children's needs ahead of her own. She is survived by six children, Nancy Wood of Lowell, Carol Rakowski and her husband Peter of Westminster, MA, Donna Maffeo and her husband Dennis of Tewksbury, Joanne Kenney and her husband James of Tewksbury, Donald R. Wood Jr., and his wife Anne (Treanor) Wood of Lowell, and John M. Wood of Malden; seven grandchildren, Peter and Kevin Rakowski, Jessica, Joshua, and Jaclyn Kenney, Joe and Hannah Maffeo; one great grandchild, Connor Rakowski; two sisters, Charlotte Burgess of Malden, Jane Abbott and her husband Don of Malden; a brother, Edward McAleavey of Medford; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was also sister of the late Margaret Olsen, Joseph McAleavey, Hugh McAleavey, and Eileen O'Malley.
Her Funeral Service was held Friday, Nov. 13, in the funeral home, followed by interment in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the American Lung Assn., 460 Totten Pond Rd., Suite 400, Waltham, MA 02451, will be appreciated.
