Obituary

George B. von der Lippe, 61, of Bedford died November 2, 2009 at Elliot Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Newton, MA on December 19, 1947, he was the son of Carl and Inez (Buckingham) von der Lippe. He lived in Bedford for seven years,
He graduated from Wellesley High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and a doctorate in German language and literature from Brown University. His scholarship involved groundbreaking literary detective work comparing Edgar Allan Poe and E.T.A. Hoffman.
Dr. von der Lippe was a German professor at St. Anselm College for 26 years where he served as chairman of the foreign language department.
The family includes a son, Christopher C. von der Lippe of Manchester; his mother, Inez (Buckingham) Lawrence of Goffstown; and his former wife, Angela von der Lippe of New York, NY.
IN HIS LIFE: In addition to his many scholarly articles, he also authored a critical study of Martin Luther, translated the autobiography of the German prizefighter Max Schmeling, and translated and edited an important World War II novel critical of the Nazi regime.
The funeral was held Thursday, November 5, 2009 at St. Anselm Abbey Church on the campus of St. Anselm College. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley, MA
