Charles W. Ashby, 89, of Birmingham, Alabama died Saturday, October 31, 2009 at St-Martin’s-in-the-Pines in Birmingham, Alabama.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Evergreen Cemetery, Fitzgerald, GA, with the Rev. Lonnie Lacy officiating.
Mr. Ashby was born February 2, 1920 in Wardtown, Virginia to the late Willard S. and Margaret Gladstone Ashby. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia, with a degree in electrical engineering and served in the United States Navy during World War II. For the past 60 years he had lived in Birmingham, AL where he was the retired founder of Charles W. Ashby Co., an electrical equipment company. He was a member of St. Lukes’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham, AL.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Teal Ashby of Birmingham, AL; Grandchildren: Rick and Kathy Meriwether of Clearwater, FL, Leigh and Keith Stewart of Buffalo Grove, Illinois and Leslie and Zack Davis of Tampa, FL. and 5 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Selma Dorminy Ashby, a daughter, Zena Meriwether, two brothers and a sister.
