Ludowici- Barney Freeman Poppell, age 65, passed away Friday, October 30, 2009 at Candler Hospital in Savannah after a long illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Long County and a retired carpenter.
Surviving is his wife of 41 years: Mary Jane Poppell of Ludowici; four children: Framon Poppell of Ludowici, Brenda and husband Barry Smith of Ludowici, Roy and wife Lori Poppell of Brunswick and Ronnie Poppell of Ludowici; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters: Ida Mae Thomas of Crescent and Bobbie Ryals of Townsend; one brother: Elton Poppell of Tibet and several nieces and nephews and other family members also survive.
Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 3 p.m. from the Davis Cemetery in Long County with the Reverend Danny Stillwell officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Active Pallbearers will be Tony Perry, George Dudley, Frank Dudley, Larry Thomas, David Poppell, and Frank McClelland Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Lonnie “Speedy” DeLoach, Franklin Dunham, Gary Futch, John Puckett, Zip Billings and Dr. Bruce Tripp.
