Obituary

WORCESTER-George J. Spanakis, 66, of Worcester, died Monday, October 26th in UMass-Memorial Hospital. He leaves his wife of 36 years, Agathi (Kalis) Spanakis; his son Dr. Spiro G. Spanakis of Worcester; a daughter, Dr. Nicole C. Spanakis of Narragansett, RI; a brother Emmanuel J. Spanakis of Vanncover, BC; a sister, Maria wife of Konstantine Farangakis of Crete, Greece and several nephews and nieces. His brother Eleftherios J. Spanakis died August 28th of this year.
He was born in Irakleon, Crete, Greece the son of John and Fotini (Stathakis) Spanakis; and had served in the Greek Army. Mr. Spanakis was a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration. He owned and operated the Athol House of Pizza and Bakery for the past 34 years. Mr. Spanakis was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and at one time chaired their Greek Festival; and a member of AHEPA.
The funeral is Thursday, October 29th from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a service at 11:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, October 28th from 6:00 until 9:00 PM in the funeral home.
