Vernell Phillips Jewell, 84, of Fitzgerald, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the Fitzgerald Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Friday, October 23, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. Jewell was born November 10, 1924 in Coffee County to the late Jake and Maggie Spires Phillips. She lived most of her life in Douglas and was a former resident of Ocilla. She had lived in the Fitzgerald area for the past 14 years. She was a former CNA at Shady Acres in Douglas. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Glenda Polan of Fitzgerald, LaVerne Bryan & Byron of Lake City, FL, and Venita Guthrie & Danny of Lenox; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one sister: Susie Mae Phillips Taylor of Tifton; and one brother: Barney Phillips of Albany. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Richard Edwin Jewell and a sons-in-law: John F. Polan and Tommy W. Harper.
