ENSLEY-ALVAREZ - Betty M. Ensley-Alvarez, 77, passed away Thursday evening, October 15, 2009 at Baptist Medical Center in Fernandina Beach, FL. She was a native of Jenken Jones, WV and made her home in Fernandina Beach, FL for the past 19 years, previously residing in Newport News, VA and Houston, TX. She was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church of Fernandina Beach, FL and a member of local art guild. She enjoyed painting and music, especially the Gaithers. Mrs. Ensley-Alvarez also served with the Baptist Medical Center - Nassau Auxiliary. She was retired from NASA and had been with the agency since it's earlier days at Langley Field, VA before relocating to Houston, TX. She was the personal secretary to Dr. Faget, the director of NASA. She made a trip to Russia with our astronauts when the agency began utilizing Russian Cosmonauts. Mrs. Ensley-Alvarez was predeceased by her former husband, Ray Ensley, and two brothers, Billy Marshall and Hubert Marshall. Survivors include her husband, Albert "Ybor" Alvarez of Fernandina Beach, FL; two step sons, Sammy Alvarez, also of Fernandina Beach, and Benny Alvarez (Harriet) of St. Marys, GA; two step daughters, Delores Strickland and Rita Gray (Colin), all of Fernandina Beach; two sisters Barbara J. Grant of Woodbridge, VA and Jeanette Robbins of Williamsburg, VA; one brother, Robert Marshall of Newport News, VA, and by her loving pet, Cleo. No local services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial donations be made to The Humane Society. Arrangements by Green Pine Funeral Home, Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Yulee.
