Obituary

James W. Fitzgerald, 89, passed away at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on October 14th, 2009. He was born in Boston on June 1st, 1920 to his parents Patrick and Mary (Maloney) Fitzgerald. James was raised and educated in South Boston. During World War II, he served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army. For over 35 years he held a civilian position at Hanscom Air Force Base, retiring as the Printing Plant Manager. James has been a resident of Medford for most of his life and was a communicant at St. Francis of Assisi Parish. He enjoyed being a volunteer at the Bread and Roses Soup Kitchen in Lawrence. For the past few years, James has been a resident of the Hearthstone Assisted Living Community in Brockton where he remained active until this past month . He is survived by his children; Sr. Maryanne Fitzgerald, SC of Seaford, New York, Kathleen Fitzgerald and her husband Mark Stavely of Jamestown, Rhode Island and by Mark Fitzgerald and his partner Elliot Berusch of Medford; by his grandson Jonathan Stavely of Cambridge; and by his siblings; David Fitzgerald of Randolph and Mary Joyce of South Boston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his wife Edith E. (Bruen) Fitzgerald in 1989. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Saturday October 17th at 8 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Medford at 9 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday October 16th from 4-8 PM.
