Richard Toomey, 85, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Epoch of Sharon Nursing Home in Sharon after a period of failing health. He was the husband of 57 years of Mary C. “Kitsy” (Sugrue) Toomey. Born in Mitchellstown, Co. Cork, Ireland, he came to the United States at age 5 and settled in Revere. He was a graduate of Revere Schools. Mr. Toomey worked as a custodian in the Stoughton School System for many years. He was the Head Custodian at the Dawe North School in Stoughton for several years. He also worked at the West School and the O’Donnell Middle School before retiring several years ago. Recently, he spent his winters in Royal Palm Beach in Florida. Mr. Toomey was a member of the Stoughton Irish American Society. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and fishing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters: Margaret L. “Peggy” Toomey and Kathleen A. “Kathy” Toomey both of Franklin, and his two sons, Richard J. Toomey of Stoughton and Joseph M. Toomey of Easton. He was the brother of Theresa Sugrue of Easton, Mary Spinazzola of Revere and the late James, Eileen and Joseph Toomey. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, Meaghan, Patrick and Brendon Toomey.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Tuesday, October 13 at 11 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 12 Noon. Visiting Hours Monday 4-7 PM. Burial will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
