Obituary

WORCESTER-George Tsiokas, 93, of Worcester, died peacefully, Thursday, October 8 at home surrounded by his beloved sisters. He leaves a brother, Theodore Tsiokas of St. Petersburg, FL; four sisters, Sophia Tsiokas, Katherine Nanchu, Thalia McGrath and Helen Pilitsis, all of Worcester; a sister-in-law, June Tsiokas of Worcester. He also leaves a nephew, nieces, grand nieces, grand nephews and his beloved cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers, Stephen, James, Spyridon, Gust and Pericles. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, son of Nicholas and Marina (Boulios) Tsiokas. He graduated from Stenotype Institutes in Chicago, IL and Boston, MA.
George served 25 years in the military service. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps Finance Office in Indiana. He was recalled to duty from the Air Force Reserves during the Korean War to Headquarters Eighth Air Force, Judge Advocate as military court reporter at Fort Worth Texas. During the Vietnam War, George requested a voluntary recall from the Air Reserve, Strategic Air Command. He retired after 25 years as a Senior Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force.
Among his more memorable active duty assignments were from September, 1956 to September, 1958 he worked in the office of the U.S. Air Attaché, American Embassy in Rangoon, Burma; from August, 1960 to March, 1967 he worked for the Secretary of the Air Force, The Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Because of his fluency in the Greek language, George worked at the Hellenic National Defense Headquarters, the Greek Pentagon, in Athens, Greece during 1967 and 1968; In December 1968, he was reassigned to the Secretary of the Air Force until his retirement in September, 1971.
George was a member of the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, he enjoyed golfing, was an avid photographer and a world traveler and he was a 32nd Degree Mason. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the VNA Hospice for their excellent and loving care they provided to George.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 13, from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St., with an 11 AM service in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell St. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Visiting hours are Monday, October 12 from 5-7 PM in the funeral home.
