Alex Economos, 89, of New Bedford died peacefully on Tuesday October 6, 2009 after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Lucy (Bollea) Economos; they had been married for 62 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late George and Mary (Dube) Economos, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Alex worked in small construction with his father and brothers. He later worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1979.
During World War II, he served as a Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 486th Bomb Squad and the 340th Bomb Group. He specialized as a propeller mechanic with B25 Med Bombers. He participated in air combat in the Balkans, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Northern Appenines, and Po Valley. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Distinguished Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Alex enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and being on his computer. He loved spending time with his three great-nephews, Tommy, Alex, and Roger Ledoux.
Alex is survived by his wife; his sister, Alice Reedy; his sister-in-law, Josephine Ledoux and her husband Marcel; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late James, John, Peter, and Charles Economos.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
