George T. Underwood, 95, died Saturday, October 3rd in the Kent Regency Center, Warwick. He was the husband of the late Evelyn E. (Podvin) Underwood to whom he was married for 68 years.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Jesse and Viola ( Cornell ) Underwood. He was employed by Livermore & Knight, Bank Lithograph, lastly retiring from Foremost Lithograph.
An amateur radio operator for nearly 80 years, George, whose “handle” was W1GPE, talked to operators all over the world. More recently, however he enjoyed confining his conversations to a close circle of HAM friends, where daily ( at 5:30 am) lively discussions of the “taboo” subjects of politics, religion, death and taxes took front and center. More tame were weather reports and pet stories. Although quite opinionated (!) and not always on the same page, he loved his buddies.
He valued & was amused by new friendships formed at Kent Regency – his roommate and “dining experience” companions, visitors and staff.
George and Evelyn spent many happy Saturday mornings “yard sale-ing”, excitedly bringing home perfect “finds”. Together, they created a park-like yard decorated with their “treasures”.
With them, many pampered dogs shared their lives, the last being George’s beloved Skippy who, along with Evelyn are waiting on the other side of” the Rainbow Bridge”.
He is survived by his daughter, Dianne W. Fuzek and her husband Tony of Greenville; Grandchildren, John Fuzek of Greenville, Anthony Fuzek of Taunton, MA and Karen Fuzek of Cranston; Great Grandchildren, Bethany & Delaney Fuzek of Taunton, MA and Anthony Michael Fuzek of Johnston.
His funeral will be held Wednesday at 11am in the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Visitation Wednesday 10-11am. Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
