Obituary

Carlos J. "Charlie" Viveiros, 85, of Dartmouth died Wednesday August 20, 2003 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Sophie (Seconda) Viveiros; they had been married for 55 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Francisco Jose Viveiros and Maria doCarmo (Raposa) Jeronymo, he lived in New Bedford Dartmouth for most of his life.

Well-known for this constant good humor and ready wit, his kindness and generosity made him a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was an active member of North Baptist Church in New Bedford, where he served as a Deacon and participated in many other activities including the property and finance committees.

A marine machinist at Hathaway Machinery Company in Fairhaven for over 40 years, he was popular and respected by the owners and captains of the fishing fleet. A skilled handyman, carpenter, and mechanic, there was nothing that he could not build or repair.

A Navy veteran, Mr. Viveiros was a member of the Weeks-Plummer American Legion Post and the Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter 7 of the Disabled American Veterans. He was proud of his service during World War II and enjoyed reminiscing about his adventures in the Philippines.

He had a lifelong obsession with golf, working as a caddy in his youth and winning the All-City Championship at the Whaling City Country Club in 1962. He also enjoyed the outdoors, especially all types of hunting both locally and in the Berkshires, as well as many summers spent at Brandt Beach in Mattapoisett.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce L. "Jody" Heck of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Alison C. (Heck) Young and her husband, Anthony, of Mattapoisett, and Amanda M. Heck of New Bedford; a brother, Walter Jerome of Dartmouth; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was the stepson of the late Manuel Jeronymo, Sr., and the brother of the late Manuel Jeronymo, Jr., Alfred Jeronymo, and Agnes Santos.

His Funeral Service will be held on Monday August 25, 2003 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday August 24, 2003 from 1-5 PM.
