Obituary

Sammy L. Troup, 62, of Greensboro, North Carolina died Monday, September 21, 2009 at his residence.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 Saturday afternoon, September 26, 2009 at George Brothers Funeral Service, 803 Greenshaven Drive, Greensboro, North Carolina 27406. Military Rites will be conducted at 3 PM.

Sammy was born February 14, 1947 in Ocilla, Georgia to Elizabeth Spinks Troup and the late Plemon Troup. Mr. Troup was in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 21 years as a CWO2. During his career, Mr. Troup was given the Navy Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Navy Expeditionary Medal. He served on the USS Epping Forest, USS Colleton, USS El Paso, USS William H. Stanley, USS Capodanno, USS Grand Canyon, USS Jonas Ingram, and the USS Harrry E. Yarnell. He was also employed with P. Lorillard Tobacco Company as a powerhouse superintendent. He was an avid fisherman and North Carolina Tar Hills basketball fan. Known as Poppy Sam to his grandchildren Halle and Landon Bynum, he was known as a hero to his family.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 37 years: Dolores M. Troup of Greensboro, NC; three daughters: Shannon Troup Bynum & Burt of Fitzgerald, Kimberly Troup and Samantha Troup, both of Greensboro, NC; two grandchildren: Halle and Landon Bynum of Fitzgerald; sister: Kathleen Cook & John of Fitzgerald; brother: Larry Troupe & Earlene of Fitzgerald; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Autism Society of North Carolina, 810 Warren Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27403.
