Obituary

T. Michael Fitzgerald, 66 of East Walpole passed away September 19 at Caritas Norwood Hospital with his family by his side after fighting a long and hard battle against lung cancer.
Born in Walpole, August 3, 1943, the son of the late Thomas J. and Florence G. (Kannally) Fitzgerald, Mr. Fitzgerald was a lifelong Walpole resident.
Mr. Fitzgerald was a 1961 graduate of Walpole High School.
After high school, Mike served 4 years in the US Coast Guard stationed aboard the CGC Castle Rock and CGC Casco both based out of Boston.
For 15 years he was a mechanic at Monte’s Exxon in Walpole. After 10 years working for the Town of Walpole as a mechanic, he retired but continued to enjoy helping both his children who were starting their own businesses.
Mike was a long time parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish in East Walpole. He was a volunteer on many committees including Parish Council President, CCD Teacher, Turkey Raffle MC, building and repair volunteer as well a bartender for many of the functions held in the Parish Hall. He was always available to lend a helping hand when called upon for the Church and or for friends.
He was the beloved husband and best friend of Lois (Montecalvo) Fitzgerald.
Their 45 year marriage was filled with wonderful memories and events. He created a great legacy for their two children, Debora Iddings and her husband Tom of Norton and Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Veronica of Wareham and his 7 loving grandchildren.
He is predeceased by both his sisters, Florence “Fawny” Sabonis of East Walpole and Marjorie A. Wall of Norwood. He had many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, September 26 from the Ginley Funeral Home, 892 Main St., Walpole at 8:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 9:00 a.m.
Burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4-8 p.m.
