Obituary

Samuel Nerpouni, 85, of New Bedford, formerly of Chelmsford, passed away on September 16, 2009. He was the best friend and loving husband of thirty-four years of Marjorie (Powers) Nerpouni, and the widower of Elizabeth (Sarkisian) Nerpouni. Sam is survived by two daughters, Karen Nerpouni of Woburn and Susan Kemp and her husband Richard of Rocky Hill, Connecticut and one granddaughter, Elizabeth, a student at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, five sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law and one dear cousin Eva Guzelian.

Sam spent thirty years in the submarine service, beginning with service in World War II. He was near Japan when they dropped the atomic bomb. His sub picked up two American pilots who were made honorary members of their boat, the Perch 313. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Because of his fifty years of membership in the U.S. Submarine Veterans, he was made a member of the prestigious Holland Club.

Sam lived in Cambridge and graduated from Rindge Technical High School. After his service in the Navy, he completed two years of study at Wentworth Institute in Boston. He worked as a supervisor and drafting engineer and retired from Lowell Gas, now Keyspan.

He was a member of the Chelmsford Lodge of Elks and the Chelmsford Country Club. Golf was one of his favorite activities.

His Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Visitation will be on Friday morning from 9-10 AM prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the kind people at Brandon Woods who cared for Sam during his last years.
