Edmundo Neves
Emigrated from São Miguel, Açores, Portugal at the age of 49.
TEWKSBURY – Edmundo Neves, age 89, a resident of Tewksbury for the past 23 years, passed on Friday evening on September 11th, at Lowell General following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria Estrela Pires das Neves, with whom he had celebrated a 62nd Wedding Anniversary on October 20, 2008. He was born in São Miguel, Açores on September 24, 1919. He is the son of the late Francisco José das Neves and Maria do Carmo Andrade das Neves. He had lived on the island of São Miguel until 1969 when he moved his family to the Cambridge and Somerville area. He had then relocated to Tewksbury in 1986.
Mr. Edmundo Neves served in the Portuguese Army.
He retired as a shipper/receiver from Lechmere Sales Warehouse and was a member of AFL-CIO Teamsters Local 25 from 1973 – 1986.
Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by five children. Maria Eduarda Leite of Wareham, MA, Ana Maria Macedo of Reading, MA, Lucie Marie Neves Aguiar of Tewksbury, MA, Marie Alice Johnston of Stoneham, MA , and Emanuel Rui Neves of Lowell, MA. Also survived by, son-in-laws Eduardo Leite, Antonio Macedo, Gualter Aguiar, Brian Johnston; former daughter-in-law Luciana Neves; ten grandchildren Sandra Barletta, Richard Macedo, Karen Melo, Christine Santos, Jessica and Jennifer Aguiar, Brianna and Catrina Johnston, Matthew and Maggie Neves; eleven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Aida Ponte, Maria Clara Duarte, João Rui Neves, Manuel Neves, and José Neves.
His Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, September 15th in Saint Williams Church, Tewksbury. Burial followed at the Tewksbury Cemetery.
