Richard Nissen, of Plymouth and formerly of Sandwich and Simsbury, CT, passed away on August 31st at the age of 93. Richard was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from New York State Maritime Academy. He received his commission in the U.S Navy as ab ensign and was assigned to the USS Curtiss as an assistant damage control officer. They were at Pearl Harbor on December 7th when it was attacked. In 1945 he left active duty and entered the Naval Reserves when he was reactivated during the Korean Conflict. Richard received the American Defense Medal with Bronze Star, the Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Star and the Atlantic-Mediterranean-Near East Medal with Bronze Star. He retired from the Navy in 1976 as a Commander. Richard also worked for Travelers Insurance Co. as a safety engineer for 30 years. He was the beloved husband of the late Beverly (Tompkins) and is survived by his daughter Diane Lawton of Plymouth, his cherished grandchildren Tad, Andrew and his wife Jocelin, Nathaniel Nissen and Stacey Parker and her husband Joe. He also leaves his 3 great grandchildren Avery, Lauren and Abigail. He was the father of the late David Nissen and father-in-law of the late Theodore “Ted” S. Lawton III. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 9th at Plymouth Crossings Assisted Living, 157 South St, Plymouth at 3 PM. Burial will be held in Connecticut.
