Dr. Frank J. Gualtieri, Jr., formerly of Canton, passed away August 23rd at the age of 56 in Japan where he had been living for the past 23 years. Born in Boston, he was raised in Canton and graduated from Canton High School where he was a member of the Math Team. Dr. Gualtieri received a B.S. from M.I.T., an M.S. from the University of Rhode Island, two M.S. degrees and a Ph.D. from Brown University, and a B.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Maryland, University College. Fluent in Japanese, he taught extensively throughout Japan, including positions in Okinawa and Misawa. He was the Interim Director of the UMUC Asia Distance Education program. He was also the Director of Technical Translations for the J.E.O.L. in Japan. Beloved son of Dr. Frank J. Sr., and Gertrude L. (Hartford) of Canton. Brother of Trudy L. Harris and her husband Bob of Canton, Maria T. Gualtieri, M.D. and her husband John Maxwell of Shrewsbury, Vincent P. Gualtieri and his wife Beth of Florida, Emily A. Martinez and her husband Jim of Ware, Lisa J. Gualtieri of Duxbury, Larry J. Gualtieri and his wife Carolyn of E. Sandwich, John M. Gualtieri and his wife Lynne of Canton, Cynthia M. Foley and her husband Chris of Wrentham, and Christina M. Macdonald and her husband David of Stoughton. Also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved Uncle Frank, and by close colleagues and friends Dr. William Beck, Ruth Lattimore, and Paul Lattimore, of Japan. Visiting hours at the Dockray and Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Canton, Friday 4 – 8 pm. Funeral mass at St. Gerard Majella Church Canton Saturday morning at 10 am.
