Gregory W. Zarakotas, 85, of Manchester died August 21, 2009 at his residence following a long illness.
He was born in Manchester on January 27, 1924, to Vasilios and Eprosine (Joanou) Zarakotas and lived in Manchester all of his life.
He was educated in the local school system and worked many years for the Pericles Club and Rockingham Park in Salem.
He entered the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman and took part in the battles of India Berma, and the air offensive in Japan and China. He received the Good Conduct medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.
IN HIS LIFE: The family includes his beloved wife of 39 years, Lena (Pinard) Zarakotas of Manchester; a step-daughter, Rena Pellenz of Portland ME; two grandsons, Jason Pellenz and Nicholas Pellenz both of Portland ME; one great grandson, Jacob Pellenz, and a great granddaughter, Brynn Pellenz; one brother, Valos Zarakotas of Lowell MA; a nephew, William “Bill” Zarakotas; a sister in law, Virginia Zarakotas and many nieces and cousins.
The funeral was held Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in the funeral home. Fr. Andrew Mahalares officiated. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Rd., Manchester
